When Your Thyroid Reports Improve But You Still Don’t Feel Like Yourself
Remember the time when you were young and were told by your parent to tell when something happens? Maybe – when the longer needle (minute hand) of the clock hits 12 or the cooker whistles 3 times? And reporting that felt like being useful?
Sometimes I wonder if it is still the same. The endocrinologist tells you that the TSH has to be within the normal range. And the day the report shows normal levels, it feels like a win and you use it as evidence to say
“Look, it is normal now.”
The dosage gets adjusted and the endocrinologist is satisfied enough. And yet you still cannot wake up fully recharged, still feel mental fog, still feel cold when others are fine, still notice the hair in the bathroom drain and still your weight refuses to move. And you still feel slow - as if you are carrying a big sack of something around.
Now before you go about negating the medical part as unimportant, let me tell you that what it is measuring and trying to normalise, by medication, is important. If you have Hashimoto’s, hypothyroidism, nodules, thyroiditis, or any other thyroid condition, please continue medical care.
But if you have been swinging between doses, visits to the clinic and a feeling that “This is my life now”, read on. Because sometimes the report improves before you do.
You see the question is not just about dosage but also the life which you are living inside of. Has anyone asked you what or how much you have been swallowing? I am not talking about food but:
The things you left unsaid (I am not talking about the throat chakra thing here). I am talking about the disagreements, the adjustments, the false understanding and the reluctance to offend someone.
Let me ask you, because many people have noticed their thyroid issues beginning or worsening around very specific life conditions – do you recognise any or similar in them?
- A woman’s condition worsened when her mother-in-law moved in.
A woman was diagnosed with hypothyroidism during her pregnancy. - A man was diagnosed after a promotion because he was less able to refuse anything.
- Years of asking for help from the husband, then stopping because it was easier to do everything herself than to keep explaining why she was tired.
- Children growing up, and suddenly the role that kept her useful for years beginning to loosen.
- A marriage where she had a voice, technically, but using it always came with a cost.
- One woman said - “I do not recognise my own voice anymore. I hear myself speaking at work, at home, with my family, and it is not me. It is who I became so that everyone else could stay comfortable.”
The thyroid sits in the throat, yes. There was a time when I used it as a neat spiritual metaphor. But now, I am more interested in the lived pattern around it.
The Somashadow lens.
A thyroid pattern, in the Somashadow lens, carries the story of a slowed self. When someone stops using their voice, not the sound coming out of the throat but the one that comes from within, because it repeatedly came with a cost, the body may begin to ‘speak’ in other ways.
The body says – “slow down” and the metabolism slows. The mornings get heavier.
It says – “No more adjusting” and the mind becomes foggy. The body feels cold.
It says “I am done being a pushover” and the weight becomes stubborn.
And then the doctor adjusts the TSH, the TSH improves, and you still feel as if you are moving through life at half speed.
This is not because medication does not work, it is useful. But it is like flogging a tired mule that has stopped moving. You may get it to take a few more steps, but the medicine cannot ask why it stopped in the first place? What happened to the person who learned to keep adjusting until even their own voice started sounding unfamiliar.
The thyroid report can tell you what the gland is doing. It cannot tell you what your life has asked you to swallow. Why you kept functioning, at a cost. Why you became reasonable too quickly. Why you learned to stay useful, agreeable, composed, available, and low-conflict. And why your real response had to pass through too many filters before it was allowed to become speech.
The body does not always shout first - Sometimes it slows.
A thing about this work, it is not like a replacement where you can stop your medication. As I always say, this is working a different, deeper layer so the medical care continues. But alongside that, the inquiry goes on as to how did you become the person who adjusts, absorbs, understands, explains, manages and carries on?
This is not a weakness but training. Many people especially women have been trained very well. At some point, the body stopped cooperating with that arrangement.
This is the layer I work with.
When we work with the emotional roots of thyroid conditions in the Somashadow Method, we work with:
The suppressed voice — the specific pattern of what you have been unable to say, and to whom, and for how long.
The nervous system — bringing the body out of chronic protection mode so that healing becomes physiologically possible.
Bach Flower Remedies — specific remedies for the emotional states that sit underneath thyroid dysfunction. Agrimony for the one who smiles through suffering. Centaury for the one who cannot refuse. Mimulus for the quiet fear that has no name. These are not vague; they are precise.
Shadow work — meeting the part of you that learned to make herself small, not with judgment but with the kind of honest compassion that allows something to finally shift.
None of this replaces medicine. All of it addresses what medicine doesn't reach.
A question to sit with
Think of the last time you said something you genuinely meant — not the diplomatic version, not the softened version, not the version edited for the comfort of the room.
How long ago was that?
If the answer makes you pause, your thyroid has been trying to tell you something. This is your invitation to listen.
