The Threshold

A shadow workbook for the woman whose body is changing at the same time as her tolerance, identity, relationships and sense of who she is becoming.

Perimenopause and menopause are usually explained through hormones, hot flushes, sleep, weight, periods and changing libido. All of that is real. But many women also notice something harder to put on a report: the patience is shorter, the things they tolerated for years suddenly feel unbearable, the body feels unfamiliar, and the roles that once gave life structure can begin to feel strangely tight. The Threshold is a self-paced workbook for that part of the transition. It explores the grief and relief that can exist together, the rage that seems to arrive without warning, the changing relationship with the body and sexuality, the fear of becoming invisible, the mother or caregiver identity that may have occupied decades, and the uncomfortable question underneath all of it: if I am no longer willing to be the woman I have always been, who am I becoming now?

How the 30-Day Practice Works

The workbook moves through four themes, each designed to shift your relationship with your body:

You can read the workbook quickly, but I would not recommend finishing it in one sitting. Some questions are better noticed in ordinary life than answered immediately on a page. Week 1: What Has Changed Begin with what has become harder to tolerate. Notice where irritation appears, which demands now feel heavier and the moments when you catch yourself thinking, โ€œI cannot keep doing this.โ€ Rather than trying to correct the reaction, write down what was actually happening. Week 2: The Woman Everyone Knows Look at the roles you have carried for years and notice which ones other people still expect from you. Pay particular attention to the places where you keep behaving like the old version of yourself even though something inside has already moved on. Week 3: Body, Visibility and Desire Spend this week with the changing body. Notice the mirror, photographs, clothes, sexuality, ageing and the moments when you feel more visible or less visible than before. The purpose is not to force body acceptance. It is to see what the changes have come to mean about you. Week 4: What Comes With You Return to the workbook and look at what you are ready to stop carrying. It may be a role, an expectation, an apology, an old resentment or simply the belief that everybody else must be comfortable before you can make a change. Choose one small thing that belongs to the woman you are becoming rather than the woman everybody already knows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a workbook about managing menopause symptoms?
No. It does not tell you how to treat hot flushes, improve sleep, lose weight or balance hormones. It explores the emotional and identity changes happening alongside perimenopause and menopause. Continue with the medical or gynaecological care appropriate for you.
Can I use it if I am taking HRT?
Yes. The workbook does not interfere with medical treatment or require you to make any changes to HRT or other medication.
Do I have to be a mother for this to apply?
No. Motherhood is one possible identity explored in the workbook, but caregiving, work, relationships, sexuality, ageing and changing visibility can affect women regardless of whether they have children.
Is this for perimenopause or menopause?
Both. The workbook is about the transition itself, including the years in which periods are changing as well as the stage after menstruation has stopped.
What if I feel relieved rather than upset about menopause?
Relief belongs here too. Not every woman grieves the end of menstruation or fertility. Sometimes the stronger feeling is freedom. The workbook does not tell you what menopause should mean to you.
Is this therapy or counselling?
No. It is a self-paced reflective workbook. Some questions may bring up strong feelings, and you can leave any section that feels too much to work through alone.
How long will it take?
You can read and write it in a few hours, but it is designed to be used slowly over about a month. The value is less in completing every page and more in noticing what begins to appear in your actual life.

The body changing at midlife can feel like something that has to be managed quickly: fix the sleep, control the weight, calm the mood, improve the libido, get back to normal. But sometimes the harder truth is that the old normal no longer fits. The woman who adjusted, carried, accommodated and remained available may still be there, but she may no longer be willing to do all of it at the same cost. The irritation, grief, relief, changing desire and need for space can be inconvenient, but they can also tell you something about where one version of your life is ending. The Threshold gives you somewhere to ask what comes next before somebody else answers the question for you.
